A large photograph of Jews crossing the Chlodna Bridge in the Warsaw ghetto

A large photograph showing Jews crossing the bridge over Chlodna Street on one side of the Warsaw ghetto ['the small ghetto'] to the other side [the 'great ghetto'] at the intersection of Chlodna and Zelazna streets. Warsaw ghetto, c. 1942.

Chlodna Street - a major Polish lifeline, belonged municipality to the Aryan area and  crossed the Warsaw Ghetto in two. Beginning in October 1940, gates were set up on Chlodna Street, which were opened at certain hours of the day for pedestrians and vehicles from one side of the ghetto to the other side. It was the role of the Jewish police to open the gates of the ghetto streets, while temporarily blocking traffic on the "Aryan" Chlodna Street. At the end of January 1942, a wooden bridge was stretched over Chlodna Street, and a permanent connection was established between the two ghettos. This is the bridge seen in the photo before us. From that time on, the Jews passed continuously on both sides of the ghetto on the bridge that connected them. The rich Jews lived in the "small ghetto", and in the "great ghetto" living conditions were more difficult.
