A Jewish couple in the Budapest ghetto with a yellow badge - after its liberation in 1945

A Jewish couple in the Budapest ghetto with a yellow badge in their clothes - after the liberation of the ghetto in 1945. Described on the back in German: "Juden aus dem Budapester Ghetto 1945"- "Jews from the Budapest Ghetto 1945".

The so-called "Great" Budapest Ghetto was the ghetto where the Jews of Budapest, Hungary and its environs were concentrated after the Nazi occupation of Hungary during World War II until the liberation of Hungary by the Soviet Red Army. The Nazis entered Hungary on March 21, 1944, and the ghetto was established for only three months - from November 1944 until the city was liberated in January 1945. Over half of the ghetto's were sent to concentration camps mainly through the Gyalogmenetek Hegyeshalomba death marches (autumn 1944) to the Austrian border. From the establishment of the ghetto until its liberation, the population of the ghetto decreased from 200,000 to 70,000, with most of the remaining being given diplomatic protection by politicians from neutral countries in the war, such as Switzerland and Sweden.
