Diary of Anne Frank - An Unknown Variant of the First American Edition - New York 1952

ANNE FRANK the Diary of a Young Girl Published by DOUBLEDAY & COMPANY, New York 1952 - An unknown and extremely rare variant of the first  American edition of Anne Frank's diary.

The first American edition of Anne Frank's Diary was published in New York in 1952 by DOUBLEDAY & COMPANY (about five years after the Dutch edition). As is customary in American publications, it is marked with the words: "First Edition". In the second print of the first edition the words "First Edition" no longer appeared and on the page corresponding to the title page there are 6 lines detailing the details of the publisher, and the year of printing. The following editions indicate the edition number. Before us an unknown variant of the first edition of the book - the year of printing is 1952 the first editions year print of the book. The words "First Edition" do not appear, but unlike the second print of the book, the 6 lines that appear in it, do not appear in the edition before us, and are replaced by only two lines - which include the year of printing, and the name of Anne Frank's father - Otto Frank - which brought the book to print. We may have before us an experimental edition that came out in America, and even preceded the well-known first edition which was marked with the words "First Edition". This hypothesis is strengthened in light of another fact: in all the first editions of the book which were released to the American market, the price of the book, which was 3$, was printed on the dust jacket. Whereas the edition before us appears at no cost at all on the dust jacket - which strengthens the hypothesis that it was an experimental edition which preceded the first edition. And another unique feature that indicates this: in all known editions of the book the page cutting is uniform and smooth, whereas in the edition before us one can notice a jagged page cutting which seems to have been done manually.

285 p. 20 cm. Slight tears in the dust jacket. condition good - very good.
