Treasure Trove of History from the Chessed El Yeshivah in Jerusalem. 19th Century


Schedule of letters consisting of approximately 300 missives and letters from the yeshivah Chessed El in Jerusalem. Entirely in the hand of Rabbi Binyamin b"r Shlomo Yehudah. Very valuable with historic material about the history of Jerusalem in the 19th century.


Letters that were sent to rabbis and philanthropists about assistance and support for the yeshivah, letters to Rabbeinu Yosef Chaim (Ben Ish Chai) of Baghdad.


Letters to Kabbalist Rabbi Eliyahu Manne while he resided in Hebron and in Baghdad, many letters addressed to the Sassoon family:

To Rabbi David Sassoon of Calcutta, to Rabbi Saliman David Sassoon, to Reuven David Sassoon.

Letters to R' Raphael HaLevi of Beirut, to R' Raphael Yosef Shalom (Chari"sh) of Damascus, to R' Moshe Yedid of Beirut, and others.

In one of the letters to Rabbi Eliyahu Manne, when he was in Baghdad, he requested that he send regards to Moreinu V'Rabbeinu Rabbi Abdullah Somech.

Many of Jerusalem's sages are mentioned in the letters' contents: The Rishon LeTziyon Rabbi Avraham Ashkenazi, R' Yitzchak MiPrague, R' David ben Shimon (Dva"sh), R' Chizkiyah Shabtai, R' Vidal Abu, R' Shalom Adani, R' Ya'akov Sapir, etc.


Some of the letters were sent to wealthy Jews who were natives of Baghdad in the East, in India, in Damascus and Beirut, and reveal information about R' Binyamin's connection with the renowned Sassoon family of philanthropists, who were natives of Baghdad.
