An armband of the French resistance fighters during World War II - the Resistance movement
An armband of the French resistance fighters during World War II - France and the surrounding area, 1940s.
The La Résistance intérieure français, the resistance movement in France, was born in response to the occupation of France and the pro-Nazi Vichy regime after the surrender of the French government and army in 1940. Initially, its main activity was the distribution of underground newspapers. Since 1941, the underground in France has grown to a wider scale, including the explosion of railway tracks, shooting of Nazi guards, smuggling of Jewish children and the explosion of buildings. The resistance movements cooperated with the Allied secret forces. During the invasion of Normandy, the French underground cooperated with them. They created diversionary operations against the Germans and helped liberate France from the Germans immediately after the invasion.
