"Many people bought my works and did not pay me" - a scathing letter by Boris Schatz
Hard and sharp letter in the handwriting and signature of Boris Schatz the director of 'Bezalel', dated 8/17/1925, which was sent to the Chief Rabbi of Stockholm (Sweden) Rabbi Mordechai (Marcus) Ehrenfries, in which Boris Schatz pleads with him that he pay him for work he entrusted to him and did not reply, and complains harshly about his difficult financial situation.
"You should know that my financial situation is very difficult after the war, I have not yet been able to pay all the debts from the war ... and now I only get 16 pounds for month, and can you imagine that this money is not enough to live and especially for doctors because since the war I am often sick ... In my current situation, no one is not allowed to use it for the benefit of an individual and unfortunately, not everyone understands this, and many people bought my work and did not pay me ... Please do not be one of them too! ... "
At the end of the letter, Schatz apologizes for writing it in Hebrew, adding that he trusts Rabbi Ehrenfries to translate it for his wife. The letter was written during a difficult period for Boris Schatz himself, and for the Bezalel school shortly before the school's first closed due to financial difficulties.
