'This is how the State of Israel was established' - a book with a dedication by Yoni Netanyahu

'This is how the State of Israel was established' by Zeev Aharon, Levin-Epstein Publishing, Tel Aviv 1966. On the protective page, a rare dedication in the handwriting and signature of Yoni Netanyahu: "To Danny Mat, bravely... Jony" and the date: 3/12/71".

Netanyahu dedicated the book to his commander in the 80th Brigade of the Paratroopers, Major General Danny Matt (who was appointed to the position in 1966). In 1964, Netanyahu returned to Israel from studying in the United States and enlisted in the IDF. He volunteered for the paratroopers, and was assigned to the 890th Battalion. He was discharged in January 1967, but during the pre-Six Day War waiting period he was drafted into reserve service. During the Six Day War, Netanyahu fought in the 80th Brigade, a reserve paratroop brigade, at the Battle of Umm Katf in Sinai under the command of Danny Matt, in a combined heroic attack on the Egyptian force that completely paralyzed its artillery batteries. (The battle is considered one of the most successful in the history of the IDF and was later studied in military academies around the world). The recipient of the book, Major General Danny Matt [1927-2013], is considered one of the heroes of the War of Independence, when in May 1948 he Shot to death dozens of Arab Legion fighters in the Gush Etzion area, lying in ambush alone.

The book is prepared in an album format and it reviews the period of the War of Independence in dozens of photographs and heroic descriptions of the struggle before the establishment of the State of Israel until the declaration of independence. In the opening of the book, the author writes: "This book is not a book of history. It comes to bring the feeling of struggle and war to the revolt of Israel."

Jonathan (Jony) Netanyahu (1946-1976). Brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. A paratrooper, commander of Sayeret Matkal and holder of the "Masterpiece Medal". In 1976, Netanyahu was appointed commander of "Operation Entebbe" (later "Operation Jonathan") for the release of 105 Israeli hostages whose plane was hijacked to Entebbe Airport in Uganda (Africa). After the operation began to go awry, Yoni Netanyahu took the lead in the assault and was shot by Ugandan soldier, Netanyahu was wounded in the chest and shortly afterwards killed by his wounds.

Yoni Netanyahu's character has been commemorated in dozens of films, books and state ceremonies, and is a symbol of heroism in the history of the IDF and the State of Israel.
