'Terrible Warning!' Unknown Broadside by Geonei Yisroel: Rabbi Ben Zion of Bilsk, Rabbi Chaim of Brisk, the Chofetz Chaim and the Holy Gaon of Ostrovatza against Opening Rented Shops on Sabbath. Warsaw, 1911

'Terrible Warning by Leading Geonim!' Broadside by Geonei Yisroel: Rabbi Ben Zion of Bilsk, Rabbi Chaim of Brisk, the Chofetz Chaim and the Holy Gaon of Ostrovatza against opening rented shops on Sabbath using partnership or selling them to non-religious Jews. Warsaw, 1911.

Large printed broadside, initiated and distributed by the Holy Gaon Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Naftali Zilberberg of Warsaw, also known as 'Rabbi Naftali Wirshover' with a letter by the renowned Gaon Rabbi Ben Zion of Bilsk 'Sha'arei Zion' against renting shops to Jews who open them on Sabbath or selling them to such Jews. In his Psak Halacha he determines that such a sale is forbidden due to Lifnei Iver and Chilul Hashem and additional terrible prohibitions.

To this lengthy letter, Gedolei Hador Rabbi Chaim of Brisk, the Chofetz Chaim and the Holy Rab Rabbi Meir Yechiel of Otrovatza added letter supporting the Psak and against this halachic breach. Moron the Chofetz Chaim adds that even to live close to such shops - is not wise, so as not to learn from their deeds. The Rav of Ostrovatza ends his letter with a holy blessing 'and the primary redemption is by observing the Sabbath and blessed be anyone who assists this, he who writes with a broken heart'. Moron Rabbi Chaim Halevi of Brisk writes: 'Blessed be he who pays attention to observe the Torah and the Bris...'

On verso of the broadside, a concise translation into spoken Yiddish, the publisher's name 'The Shomrei Shabbos Synagogue in Warsaw', the notation 'Any Rabbi who asks for these leaves, will be given them for free' and beneath it, in Latin, the publisher's address 'Naftali Zilberberg Warsa, 3 Torda St.' that is, the Holy Gaon Rabbi Naftali of Viershov.

The letter by the Chofetz Chaim is unknown and does not appear in 'Michtavei HeChofetz Caim'. The letter by the Sha'arei Zion is printed in his book which was published in that same year, as written on the broadside.
