Presents over 500 antisemitic postcards, mainly from Europe and the USA, from the late 19th century to the Shoah. Emphasizes their role in the creation of collective European anti-Jewish imagery and antisemitic mass-culture. However, the postcards also reflect national differences. English-language postcards from before World War I mainly reproduced traditional antisemitic stereotypes; after the Russian revolution, the increasing political antisemitism is seen in the portrayal of the Jews as Bolsheviks and conspirators. Nevertheless, as opposed to Germany, Russia, and Poland, total exclusion of the Jews from civil society was not advocated. German and Slavic postcards were openly antisemitic and demanded the exclusion of the Jews. The integral role of racial antisemitism in German society well before Nazism is noted. Thematically, French postcards fall between the English and the German/Slavic ones; at first they reflected traditional Christian anti-Judaism but, with the Dreyfus Affair, political antisemitism was introduced. After a significant drop in the production and distribution of antisemitic postcards in France during World War I, another peak was reached in the 1930s, when elimination of the Jews from French society appeared as a theme.
