A Special Entry Permit to the Atlit Camp – February 1943 – Arrival of "Teheran Children"
A special permit allowing entry to the Atlit clearance camp, during the period between February 16 and February 28, 1943, issued by the immigration office of the Jewish Agency (Haifa branch) and by the Inspector in Charge of the Atlit camp. [Atlit-Haifa, 1943]. English.
On February 18, 1943, approx. 1200 "Teheran Children" – Jewish children who were transferred from Poland to Teheran and later to Palestine, arrived in the Atlit Camp; this permit was presumably issued within the framework of the operation to rescue these children.
The permit is in the name of Chaim Neiger and bears a photograph of him. Neiger (1873-1944) was a Zionist activist in Galicia and Palestine, the chairman of the Zionist Movement in Western Galicia and a member of the city council of Tarnów in Galicia. He immigrated to Palestine in 1937 and lived in Haifa. In Palestine, he continued to be a Zionist activist and worked in the insurance business.
