Torah Ohr, Lubavitch. Zhitomir Edition - The First Edition with 'Hosafot L'Torah Ohr'

Torah Ohr - sermons on chumashim Bereishit and Shemot and on the festivals, by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi. Second edition. Printed by the grandsons of the Slavuta rabbi, Rabbis Chanina Lipa and Yehoshua Heschel Shapira. Zhitomir, 1862. The edition before us includes, for the first time, 'Hosafot L'Torah Ohr.'

The first part has two title pages. The first title page bears the name of the book and the place it was printed, in red ink. 'Hosafot' has a special title page (for a total of three title pages). Important edition of the book; many subsequent editions were printed based on this edition.

Torah Ohr is a book containing the Alter Rebbe's articles from 1795-1812. It was first printed on 3 Shevat 1837 in Kapust by the Admo"r, the Tzemach Tzedek. It was printed a second time, in the edition before us, in Zhitomir in 1862, where the 'Hosafot' at the end were added. In a letter from the Admo"r the Tzemach Tzedek from the day of the first printing, he writes: "The book Torah Ohr being printed now ... contains articles and most of the sermons from 1796 through the end of 1812, of which many were reviewed and proofread by our Rebbe himself, and he approved them to be brought to print. The book includes two parts." Both parts were not actually printed, just the first part, due to slander which resulted in the government closing the Jewish printing presses in Russia, including the press in Kapust. The second part was printed in 1848, called Likkutei Torah (which also appears in this catalog), also in Zhitomir.
