Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Meir Auerbach, Author of Imrei Binah
Printed letter from Kollel Warsaw in Jerusalem, signed by the gaon Rabbi Meir Auerbach, author ofֲ Imrei Binah, confirming receipt of a sum of money through the rabbi of Gradetz, Rabbi Eliyahu Gutmacher, "the tzaddik of Gradetz." Also includes the signature of Rabbi Yehudah Loewe and a large stamp: "אנשי פולין מחוז ווארשא המתנדבים לשבת בירושלים ת"ו"- Kollel Polin.
Rabbi Meir Auerbach 1815-1878 was the nasi of Kollel Polin and the Etz Chaim yeshivah, one of the leaders of the Ashkenazic community in Jerusalem and author of Imrei Binah, the name by which he is known. He was the Av Beit Din of Kovel and then, in 1856, Av Beit Din in Kalish, by which he is also known. He ascended to Jerusalem in 1860, at which point Rabbi Shmuel Salant transferred the leadership of the city to him, and he would call him "Rabbi of Jerusalem." The regulation of not playing musical instruments at weddings in Jerusalem is attributed to him, established after a dream-question.
Rabbi Yaakov Yehudah Loewe (1713-1889) founded Kollel Polin in Jerusalem. He was a G-dly kabbalist, rabbi of Shleshin and Ra'avad of Jerusalem. He authoredֲ Bayit L'Avot. His brothers were Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Loewe, Av Beit Din of Zlotchov; Rabbi Asher Lemel Loewe, Av Beit Din of Golyn and Ra'avad of Jerusalem towards the end of his life; Rabbi Nachum Loewe, Av Beit Din of Shadek and author of Avnei Kodesh; and Rabbi Yisrael Loewe. The Jews of Posen would refer to them as "Chamishah Chumshei Torah." His tombstone is inscribed "A pure man, rabbinic leader of his generation, among of the holy people of the holy city of Jerusalem."
