COCKBURN GEORGE: (1772-1853) British Admiral of the Fleet during the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars who was present at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in February 1797 and also directed the capture and Burning of Washington in August 1814. D.S., G. Cockburn, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Office of the Admiralty, 20th October 1818. The partially printed document appoints William Mules to the rank of Commander in His Majesty's Fleet following the Prince Regent's Order in Council of the 30th January 1816 'to direct that the Establishment formed for the relief of the Lieutenants of His Majesty's Fleet who by age and Infirmities are incapable of further Service be extended so as to afford retirement to One Hundd. instead of Eighty Lieutenants at a Pension of Eight Shillings and Six pence a day each & that they be permitted to retire with the Rank of Commander'. Countersigned at the foot by two other Lords of the Admiralty, John Osborn (1772-1848, English Politician, Lord of the Admiralty 1812-24) and Henry Hotham (1777-1833, British Vice Admiral who served during the French Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars, and the War of 1812). With a blind embossed paper seal affixed to the upper left corner. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG £100-150
