DE GAULLE CHARLES: (1890-1970) French General of World War II. Later President of the French Republic 1959-69. T.L.S., C. de Gaulle, one page, 4to, Paris, 28th December 1959, to Cardinal Paul Marella, on his printed heading bearing `Le Général De Gaulle´, in French. General de Gaulle states `The testimony of Your Eminence´s kindness, in this moment of cruel morning which has recently hit me, deeply touches me..´, further saying `The ultimate honour that my brother has received from the Holy Father will be one of his last joys..´ Small overall creasing, and central fold professionally repaired. EX £200-300 Paolo Marella (1895-1984) Italian Cardinal. Elevated to the cardinalate by Pope John XXIII in 1959, same year of the present letter. Marella was the Apostolic Nuncio to France from 1953 to 1960. Pierre de Gaulle (1897-1959) French politician and resistant who fought at World War one and WWII. Younger brother of Charles de Gaulle. He died on 26th December 1959, two days before the present letter was written. Only a week earlier, he visited his brother at the Elysée where he was granted with the title of the Legion d´Honneur.
