VILLAIN RAOUL: (1885-1936) French Nationalist. Murderer of French Socialist leader Jean Jaures. Rare A.L.S., `R. Villain´, two pages, to two separate sheets, 8vo, n.p., n.d., in French. Villain refers to two programmes related to the Jeanne d´Arc festivities which he wishes to get for Mr. Hollande and for a friend war widow, stating in part `Marcel Henriot and I thought the other day that you achieved a masterpiece..´, further suggesting that the programmes could be sent to the Commerce Chamber as `..he is very much wishing to see this playwright because he could not be present to attend it during the festival..´ VG £400-600 Villain assassinated on 31st July 1914, in Paris, French socialist historical figure and anti-militarist Jean Jaures (1859-1914) firing two bullets while he was having supper. Three days later war was declared, and World War One started. Imprisoned during war time, Villain was acquitted by a jury of peers in 1919, and Jaures´ wife, as plaintiff, was ordered to pay the court costs. Anatole France wrote in l´Humanité ''Workers!... A monstrous verdict proclaims that the assassination of Jaurès is not a crime...''. Villain fled to Ibiza, Spain, where he would be killed during the Spanish Civil War.
