Signature of the 'MACHANE LEVI' Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Halevi Horowitz, son of Ba’al Hafla’ah. On Sefer Knesset haGedolah, Izmir 1731

Sefer Knesset haGedolah, by Rabbi Chaim Benvenisti, volume Even HaEzer, printed in Izmir, 1731. At the top of the title page is handwritten, “I bought this book, Tzvi Hirsch Horowitz”. This is the Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Horowitz, the Av Beis Din of Frankfurt, author of Machane Levi and Lachmei Toda, and the son of the holy Ba’al Hahafla’ah, Rabbi Pinchas Halevi Horowitz.

At the bottom of the page, a different handwriting states, “This book belongs to the great, renowned gaon in Torah and good deeds, our rabbi and teacher, the rabbi of Franfurt am Main, Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Halevi Ish Horowitz…”

Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Segal Horowitz (d.1818) Av Beis Din of Frankfurt was the son of Rabbi Pinchas Halevi Horowitz. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch directed the great yeshiva of Frankfurt and corresponded with all the great rabbis of his generation, and especially with Rabbi Akiva Eiger, and with his own brother-in-law, Rabbi Tzvi Yehoshua Halevy Horowitz AB"D of Torna, the son of Rabbi Shmelke of Nikolsburg.
