Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Shpitzer, Dayan of the General Community of Vienna. Large Original Photograph
Large photograph of Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Shpitzer of Vienna [Vienna, late 19th century?].
Rabbi Shlomo Zalman HaLevi Shpitzer (1826-1894) was one of the leading rabbis of Hungary, and foremost disciple of the Ktav Sofer. He studied at the yeshivah of the Mahara"m Schick, Av Beit Din of Chust, and was known as his primary disciple. He then studied under the Ktav Sofer, who took him as a bridegroom for his sister Gittel, daughter of the Chatam Sofer. He was appointed as a dayan in 1858 for the general community in Vienna. He left that community in 1872 following the community leaders' submission to the Reform to change the orders of prayer. He was accepted as Av Beit Din of Mattersdorf in 1874, but he did not travel to serve in the rabbinate there, because his teacher, the Mahara"m Schick, told him that his mission is to safeguard original Judaism in Vienna. As such, he remained in Vienna until his passing, as rabbi of the 'Adass Jisroel' Chareidi community at the renowned Ohel Schiff synagogue in Vienna. He passed away in 1894. He authored Tikkun Shlomo Simlat Binyamin. Responsa sent to him were printed in Shu"t Ktav Sofer, and he is also mentioned in Shu"t Chatam Sofer, where his novellae are cited.
