Discusses the establishment of the Ústredňa Židov (Jewish Center) in September 1940 by the Slovak government to administer Jewish life in Slovakia. In 1941 the government set up labor camps for the Jews
some members of the Center supported forced labor in the hope that it would delay deportation, but in April 1942 the deportations began. The Working Group (Pracovná Skupina), formed by members of the Center, led by Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandel and Gisi Fleischmann, began efforts to save Jews from deportation by bribing Slovak officials and SS-officer Dieter Wisliceny. Ca. 58,000 Jews were deported in 1942. There were no deportations in 1943 due to the intervention of conservative elements in the government. The Working Group believed that their bribery had worked, and set up a plan to save the Jews of Greece and Hungary as well
however, Wisliceny took their money and deported the Jews of those countries anyway. The Working Group even thought they could bribe the SD after the Nazi occupation of Slovakia in 1944, but soon discovered that this was impossible. They and the remaining Jews were deported.
