The first Israeli experimental satellite, Offeq-1, was launched into Space during Israel's 40th year of statehood.
Offeq-1 was launched into Space one day before Yom Kippur, 5749 (19.9.1988, 11:32 AM) by the Israeli
Shavit launcher. Its mission was to test ability to enter into orbit; generation of solar energy; transmission
reception from Space; resistance of its systems in a weightless vacuum; and characteristics of the Earth's
magnetic field. Offeq-1 orbited the Earth once every 90 minutes. The closest point to Earth in its elliptical
orbit (perigee) was 248 km. and the farthest (apogee) was 1,170 km. The satellite ended its successful mission
after 118 days.
