Homily Handwritten by Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Algazi – Jerusalem, 1742
Homily handwritten by R. Yaakov Yisrael Algazi. Jerusalem, 1742.
Manuscript, handwritten by the author, R. Yaakov Yisrael Algazi. The first page bears the heading " Homily which I prepared to deliver on Parashat Pekudei, here Jerusalem, 1742". Topic headings on the following pages.
Based on our research, it appears that this homily was never published, yet some parallel content was found in his book Shema Yisrael, in the homily for Parashat Pekudei.
The two final leaves contain three pages of poems, also handwritten by R. Yaakov Yisrael Algazi.
R. Yisrael Yaakov Algazi (1680-1756, Otzar HaRabbanim 12226), was born in Izmir to R. Yom Tov. He immigrated to Jerusalem before 1737. He was one of the leading dayanim and Torah disseminators in Jerusalem, and a dean of the Beit El yeshiva for kabbalists in the time of R. Gedalia Hayun and the Rashash. From 1755, he served as Rishon LeTzion and rabbi of Jerusalem. He authored Shalmei Tzibur, Shema Yaakov, Ara DeRabbanan and more. He published the book Chemdat Yamim, signing his name on the title page "Tolaat Yaakov son of R. Yom Tov Algazi". His disciples include his prominent son R. Yom Tov Algazi, and the Chida.
