Engagement certificate, handwritten, for the engagement of the groom, Ben-Zion, son of Chacham Rabbi Nachman Nathan Kornil from Amsterdam, with the daughter of the Gaon of Witczen, Rabbi Asher Anshil Neimann. Jerusalem, 1868.
The groom, Rabbi Ben-Zion Kornil (1853-1925), published the novellae of Maharam Chalawah (Jerusalem, 1873) and was amongst the founders of the Me'a She'arim and Even Yisrael neighborhoods. There is speculation concerning the actual date of his marriage, but in light of the existing document, it is unwarranted (see appendix).
His father the Kabbalist Rabbi Nachman Nathan Kornil (1810-1890), born in Amsterdam, his father Rabbi David belonged to the Sephardic community and his mother numbered amongst the Ashkenazic population. Childhood friend of Rabbi Yehosef Schwarz. One of the leading scholars of Jerusalem. Published books and manuscripts of the Kadmonim. Father-in-law of Rabbi Hirsch Michel Shapiro. (see appendix).
His father-in-law was Rabbi Asher Anshil Neimann (1799-1882), Av Bet Din of Witczen. Of the leading Torah scholars in Hungary. Emigrated to Jerusalem in 1862 and became the first Rabbi of Hungarian immigrants in Jerusalem. His genealogy is described in the book "HaGaon Shenishkach" (Jerusalem, 1982).
