Menachem Tziyon. Premishlan, 1885. First Edition. Bibliographic Error
Menachem Tziyon - kabbalistic work, commentary on HaAdra Zuta and kabbalistic commentary on Megillat Ruth. Two parts bound together with separate title pages.
This book is attributed to the Admo"r Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, as appears on the title page: "By the famous holy G-dly  kabbalist Rabbi Menachem Mendel ... whose honored resting place is in the holy city of Tiberias." The book was printed from a manuscript which was in the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim of Sanz's possession, as the title page continues: "and this holy manuscript was brought to the Admo"r ... Rabbi Chaim Halberstam ... and it was very beloved to the eyes of the Admo"r of Sanz - almost every day he would study [it] ... and he would be particular that it always be on his table ... and he desired very much that it be brought to print." There are enthusiastic approbations from the holy Admo"rs, sons of Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, the Admo"r of Bobov, Rabbi Leibele Eiger, Rabbi Tzadok HaKohen of Lublin and more.
But the astonishing truth, which is almost incomprehensible, is that the book's author is Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov, renowned disciple of the GR"A and among the opponents of Chassidism (who called it Mayim Adirim. The book was printed in Warsaw about a year later, [in 1886,] with the "Be'er Yitzchak" commentary by Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Chaver.) Apparently a copy of the manuscript, whether unintentionally or maliciously, came in the Divrei Chaim's possession. And this is how leading Chassidim financed, devotedly studied, and eventually published Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Shklov's book in which he quoted the words of his teacher, the Vilna Gaon, many times. We will conclude with a letter from Rabbi Shmuel Segal Landau from the "Yoshvim" of Belz, "And I, after reading two or three "doors" of this book immediately understood that it was by the GR"A's disciples ... and apparently it was Heavenly ordained that this be hidden from the holy rabbi of Sanz, so that he would read it all the days of his life" (see: Kovetz Yeshurun volume VI page 768).
