Meir Netivim, Two Parts. Polona, 1791-1792. First Edition
Meir Netivim - responsa and novellae on the Talmud and the weekly Torah readings by Rabbi Meir Margaliot, disciple of the Ba'al Shem Tov. He is known by the name of this book, as "Meir HaNetivim." Two parts. Separate title page for each of the two parts.
This is the first edition of the book by one of the greatest early Chassidim. It contains important approbations from Chassidic leaders: Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev, who writes about his scholarly and leadership qualities; Rabbi Zusha of Annipoli, who recommends and requests that anyone with a touch of fear of G-d in his heart should make the effort to purchase these books; and from the author of Ohev Yisrael of Apta (written while he was rabbi in Kozlov). There is also an interesting approbation from the gaon and kabbalist Rabbi Asher Tzvi of Ostroh, with the group from the renowned kloiz in Ostroh. There are several Torah novellae from Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berdichev on leaf 4. This is apparently the first time his Torah novellae were printed. There is a responsum about an agunah printed on leaf 82, which was sent to Rabbi Ya'akov Yosef of Polona, author of Toldot Ya'akov Yosef, who then served as rabbi of Nemirov. Part II includes a compilation of Torah novellae by the author's brother, Rabbi Yitzchak Margaliot, Av Beit Din of Yazlovitz, who drew close to the Ba'al Shem Tov before he was revealed, and was the one who led his brother to follow the Ba'al Shem Tov.
Rabbi Meir Margaliot [c. 1707-1790] was the Av Beit Din of Horodenka, Lvov and Ostroh, a tremendous sage in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah. He was one of the primary disciples of the Ba'al Shem Tov, who honored him and drew him close, one of the first to disseminate Chassidic doctrine. He drew close to the Ba'al Shem Tov from a young age, and in his book he mentions the Ba'al Shem Tov with admiration and refers to him as "My teacher, my friend." He writes: "From the day I clung to my teacher, my friend, the pious rabbi, Rabbi Yisrael Ba'al Shem Tov ... his conduct has been holy and pure, in great piety and asceticism with his wisdom, a tzaddik lives by his faith ..." He was the primary rabbi who followed the Ba'al Shem Tov, a significant cause of disputes with the Chassidic movement. This book was printed just after his passing.
