Talmud Bavli. The Only Shas with the "Divrei Chaim" of Sanz's Approbation, and he Blessed its Purchasers. Magnificent and Rare Copy with Original Leather Bindings
" ... I notify all those who know me and love me to be among the quick to purchase this Shas at full price ... and he will be heavenly blessed with much blessing and good.
Magnificent edition of the Talmud Bavli with all its commentaries and the Chatam Sofer's glosses, printed here for the first time. Printed in Vienna [Wien] 1860-1872. Rare Shas. Lacking 4 tractates.
Rabbi Eliezer HaLevi Horowitz, rabbi of Vienna, supported printing this edition of Shas. He writes in his introduction, inter alia, that the Chatam Sofer's glosses, which had been in manuscript, are printed here for the first time, and also about this version of Shas which was proofread according to a very ancient manuscript - 800 year old - "And all day our eyes watch those who proofread so that nothing uncorrected comes through them."
There is an approbation from the Admo"r Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, author of Divrei Chaim at the beginning of the tractate Yevamot volume, where he writes about the glory of this sacred work, that this Shas was printed on very beautiful paper with glowing letters. He adds that the rabbi of Vienna wrote him that he is supervising the proofreading, and that they are careful to not desecrate Shabbat nor Yom Tov, heaven forbid. (It is known that the gentile printers of the time would occasionally print for Jews on Shabbat. Apparently his intention is to hint at an edition of Shas which printed at the Schmidt Press in Vienna, about which it became known that a Jew desecrated Shabbat for its printing (material included)).
The holy rabbi of Sanz concludes with a rare, exceptional blessing: " ... I notify all those who know me and love me to be among the quick to purchase this Shas at full price because it is for the honor of our holy Torah and encouragement to those who perform a mitzvah at its best, and he will be heavenly blessed with much blessing and good ... the small one, Chaim Halberstam."
18 volumes. 34 cm. The first title pages of all the volumes are printed in colors. Magnificent embossed original leather binding, with a gilt label bearing the name of the tractate.
Fine-very fine condition. 3 volumes are lacking (Zevachim, Menachot-Bechorot and Nidah). Minimal worming perforations.
