Starý židovský hřbitov pražský (Ancient Jewish Cemetery of Prague), printed album. By Luboš Jeřábek. Prague, 1903.
Contains an extensive preface [in Czech], colored illustration and dozens of photographs of the ancient Jewish cemetery of Prague. In the photographs, the tombstones of the leaders of the city of Prague from past generations can be seen: Rabbi Avigdor Kara, the Maharal of Prague, Rabbi David Oppenheim, Rabbi David Ganz etc.
The Jewish cemetery of Prague is the oldest preserved cemetery in Europe. It has been used at least from the first half of the 15th century [the tombstone of Rabbi Avigdor Kara who died in 1439 is preserved there], but some claim that it was established hundreds of years before. The site has approximately 12,000 tombstones, but the assessment is that throughout the generations about 100,000 people have been buried there, and due to crowding, they are buried in layers, one on top of another.
5-38, [2] pages + 23 photograph plates. 30 cm. Good condition, slight wear. Original binding.
The copies of the wording on the tombstones in the Prague cemetery were brought in the book “Gal Eid” by R' Kalman Liban, Prague 1856.
