Bound Volume of Issues of the French Magazine "Le Rire" [The Laughter]. Issues 209-260. November 1898-October 1899. French. Amongst the issues in this volume:
• A special issue dedicated to the voyage of Emperor Wilhelm II to Eretz Israel. Issue no. 212, November 26, 1898. With three illustrations in color (lithographs) and numerous b/w illustrations: on the front cover – a portrait of the Emperor with a halo surrounding his head. Within the issue numerous illustrations which continue to develop the Emperor's image as Jesus – healing a leper, baptism in the Jordan River (illustration titled "Cold shower in the Jordan"), as well as an illustration in color (printed on two pages) depicting the Emperor's entrance to Jerusalem, riding a donkey. An additional illustration (spread on two pages), depicts the Emperor's visit to a Harem. On the back cover appears an illustration titled "one-man band in a European concert" portraying the Emperor as a multi-hands figure; holding in each hand a different instrument: trumpet, harp, sword, gun, book, cross, and more.
• Several issues refer to the Dreyfus Affair with illustrations related to Dreyfus. Amongst them illustrations portraying Edgar Demange – Dreyfus's attorney; Joseph Reinach – author and politician, a supporter of Dreyfus; Arthur Meyer – journalist, an anti-Dreyfusard; and more.
Le Rire – a satiric illustrated weekly magazine founded in Paris in 1894 and published until the 1950s. The magazine was very successful, and published illustrations and caricatures, in b/w and in color, created by leading French artists.
