"Goral" – "Nahalat Shiv'a" Neighborhood, ca. 1869
“Goral” no. 274, "A plot outside the city in Nahalat Shiv'a". Printed with handwritten comments, ink stamped with the stamp "Yoshvei HaMakom Nahalat Shiv'a". Printed in "printing press of Yitzchak [Gashzinani] and his partner [Ya'akov David Slutky]". Jerusalem, ca. 1869.
The document details the size of a plot in Nahalat Shiv'a with explanations about the distribution of plots. "Three will win…and the fourth part will be divided between all the others and will serve as a public place such as a Mikveh or Beit Midrash…there will be seven hundred lottery cards…"
Signed (by hand): Shmuel David of Vilnius and Yossef Rivlin. Addition handwritten by Yossef Rivlin on the lower margins: "We send this 'Goral' to our uncle Haim Schwartz…" and it continues on the left margin: "In that place sits his niece. The woman M. Sarah and her husband Yossef Rivlin".
No all the details concerning the first days of Nahalat Shiv'a are clear, however it is known that Yossef Rivlin was lucky, and his home was one of the first two houses which were to be built in the new neighborhood. Yossef and Sarah Rivlin moved to the neighborhood in ca. 1868, when only two houses were built and inhabitants were still in danger. While at home, Sarah was attacked by an Arab and as a result – died.
