“Western Wall”, embroidery. Jerusalem, [1903-4].
Pierced paper, wool threads.
A folk art embroidery, depicting in a customary visual scheme, the image of the Temple Mount. In the center, the Western Wall, its stones in red and three tall cypresses behind it; two birds facing each other with four small cypresses. On the sides - the Dome of the Rock and El-Aqsa mosque. Above this scene appears an inscription. Each word is embroidered in a different color: “Midrash Shlomo Mizrah Mekom Mikdash Ir HaKodesh Yerushalyim” (Hebrew). On the margins appears the inscription: “Shnat Kotel Ma’aravi 1904” (Hebrew). A water basin and a goblet are embroidered on both sides of the inscription. It is possible that the embroidery was created by a Levite who added this image as a personal imprint.
45X55 cm, good-fair condition, brown stain and several small stains. Framed; not examined out of frame.
