The Orphans of Ukraina in Kiriath Sefer. Cairo (Egypt): "Hameir", [1921]. Hebrew and English.
Booklet with photographs of the teachers and pupils of the agricultural school "Kiryat Sefer" founded by the teacher and founder of Bilu Movement, Israel Belkind.
About 20 B/W photos, titled in Hebrew and in English. Among them: portrait of Israel Belkind, "The orphans with their educators and instructors in Kiryat Sefer", "Pray-hour", "A lesson in trees' shadow", "Work in the kitchen", "Work in the vegetable garden", "A boat constructed by one of the orphans…", and more. All the photos, except for two, were taken by one of the pupils at "Kiryat Sefer.
In 1901 Belkind recieved the approval of the Zionist Congress to establish the agricultural school "Kiryat Sefer" in Eretz Israel, and in 1903, following the Kishinev pogroms, he brought a group of orphans, children of pogrom victims, to educate them in his school. The school was closed three years later. In the 1920s Belkind tried to resume the school’s operation and brought to the country orphans of Ukrainian pogroms, to a school first located in Hadera, and later in Safed. This experiment was also short lived since Belkind did not permit the financers of the school to interfere with his affairs and they terminated their support. [14] leaves, 15X24 cm. Good-fair condition. Stains, minor tears. Spine fastened with pasted paper. Ex-Libris label.
