Long letter (6 large leaves) handwritten and signed by R. "Shlomo Lippmann Wäldler", rabbi of Schönlanke (Trzcianka, Poland). Trzcianka, [1884].
Halachic question that was sent to R. Shmuel Salant, rabbi of Jerusalem, regarding the laws of a deaf-mute who was sent to a specialized school and taught to understand and speak.
R. Shlomo Lippman Wäldler (1831-1904) was the grandson of R. Mordechai Schonlanke, disciple of the Chatam Sofer. R. Shlomo was a disciple of the Ktav Sofer in Pressburg and a disciple of R. Azriel Hildesheimer in Eisenstadt. He was the son-in-law of R. Pinchas Leib Frieden rabbi of Komarno, (1802-1873). In 1862 he became rabbi of Kikinda (Nagykikinda, today in Serbia), and from 1865 he officiated as rabbi of Trzcianka.
R. Shlomo was orphaned of his father, R. Yaakov, at the age of ten, and was raised in the home of his teacher, the Ktav Sofer. He writes about himself, "at the behest of my grandfather I travelled to Pressburg, where I was raised in the home of my great master, the rabbi of Pressburg, and studied in his yeshiva from the age of ten until my marriage.", "G-d helped me find favor in the eyes of my master the Ktav Sofer, and he raised me in his home for many years." (Kerem Shlomo, 21, 6-17; Roni VeSimchi, V, p. 81).
