Handwritten ledger of the El Jadida Beit Din - "Monetary rulings, ketubot, gittin, testimonies, proofs", signed by various witnesses and authorized by R. David Tzabach "posek in the city of El Jadida", who was responsible for the drawing up and writing of legal documents. El Jadida (Morocco), 1931-1935.
Contains hundreds of legal documents with many signatures. Among the signatures: R. David Tzabach, R. Aharon son of Shimon, R. Yosef Elazar Haziza, R. Yitzchak Yosef Peretz, R. Reuven son of David and R. Shlomo Azaguri.
The volume opens with an inscription handwritten and signed by R. David Tzabach: "…Second ledger of ketubot and gittin and testimonies beginning at the date… Thursday, 11th of the month of Shevat 1931". R. Tzabach ends the manuscript with his signed inscription: "All the shtarot and ketubot were performed properly".
R. David Tzabach (1869-1955) was born in Rabat. Disciple of R. Ya'akov son of Walid and of R. Refael Ankawa (Encouau) who loved R. Tzabach dearly and had him review all his rulings. R. Refael highly esteemed his disciple and stated that R. David was a greater expert on the laws of gittin than himself. In 1929, R. Refael appointed R. David as posek and dayan in the city of El Jadida. In his later years, R. Tzabach moved to Jerusalem and was celebrated both among the Sephardi and the "Western" sages of the city.
The ledger contains important data of the history of the community's life, marital matters and the activities of the city's Beit Din.
