Jewish Fighting Brigade - Europe

The Jewish Brigade, known in Hebrew as the "Jewish Brigade Group" and also known as the "Jewish Brigade" and in many instances the "Brigade") was a brigade of the British Army, As part of the Yishuv's volunteering for the British Army during World War II, and only after the end of World War II in July 1944. One of the initiators of its establishment was Moshe Sharett, head of the Political Department of the Jewish Agency. This was the first British military brigade in World War II, and every soldier And its commanders were the Jews of the Land of Israel alone, with Hebrew life and Zionist symbols, who participated in the war against Nazi Germany.

The Jewish Brigade took part in the battles to break the last German defense line in northern Italy, the "Genghis Khan" line, in the Italian front of the Allies. At its peak, the brigade numbered approximately 5,000 soldiers - more than 13 percent of the total number of volunteers from the Yishuv in Palestine to the British army, estimated at 38,000 soldiers. [1] The brigade, with all its units, was in the front from March 3, 1945 through April 25, 1945, of which three weeks were in real battles.

At the end of the fighting in Italy and with the surrender of the Axis countries, the soldiers of the Brigade continued their missions of military government in Europe. In this framework, they extended great assistance to Holocaust survivors, organized the escape and their immigration to Palestine. Many of the IDF commanders in the War of Independence acquired their combat and command experience within the brigade.
