Torah Shield - Italy, 18th Century
Torah Shield. [Italy, 18th century].
Silver, sawn, pierced, engraved and embossed; granulation; partially gilt. Marked with manufacturer's mark (HS?).
Unique design. Delicate Torah shield, with rich ornamentations in vegetal patterns - branches, flowers and fruit of various kinds, embossed in various degrees of relief, which results in an airy and elaborate look.
Above and under the "window" which serves for presenting the names of Torah Portions, gilt decorations are attached with screws. Three gilt granulation pendants on the lower part (one missing and replaced by another pendant), ending with an acorn-like ornament. Chain with an attached label, bearing the name of philanthropist and businessman Solomon David Sassoon (1841-1894), father of the renowned collector David Solomon Sassoon.
Length: 17.5 cm, width: 15.5 cm. Good overall condition. One missing pendant is replaced by another pendant. Slight breaks at margins. The back part of the "window" - missing.
Provenance: The Sassoon family collection.
