Letter of Admor Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn (Lubavitcher Rebbe) to Chabad Chassidim on the day of his departure from Riga.
At the Chabad Chassidim in the United States, they were constantly trying to smuggle the Rebbe from Poland. They contacted officials in the American administration who approached the head of German Military Intelligence, Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, who worked to save the Rebbe. In spite of the dangerous situation, the Admor requested that together with him twenty other people leave, apart from his family.
On December 14, 1939, the Rebbe and his family were deported from Poland, together with twenty people, through Berlin to Riga. Three days later they arrived in Riga and on March 4, 1940 they left Riga and moved to Stockholm (Sweden).

On the day the Rebbe of Riga left Riga, he wrote a general letter to the Chassidim of Chabad throughout Europe:
"... to our friends who are in the Holy Land, and in the European countries, to whom they will live ... According to the decree of the Divine Providence, as stated above, I am traveling with the help of the Almighty, blessed be He, The love and the bonding have no break because of the partitions and the borders of the states, and this journey will be in my eyes, close to my heart and my soul's love ... As if I am only copying my residence from one city to another in the country, because even on my journey I am with you.."

On March 5, 1940, they traveled from Stockholm by train to the city of Goteborg, where they sailed on the Dartinghalm to the United States.
