Toldot Adam V'Chava and Sefer Mesharim, by Yerucham ben R. Meshulam. [Constantinople, 1516].
Ancient signatures on title page. Several glosses in ancient Oriental script.
This volume contains the Adam part and the Chava part. The Adam part is lacking approximately 60 leaves - replaced with about 45 leaves from Sefer Mesharim which were bound in their stead. The Chava part is lacking a few leaves.
Colophon on the last leaf (conclusion of the Chava part): "These two parts of Adam and Chava were completed in the month of Adar 1516 and printed in the city of Constantinople…".
This book did not leave the printing press as one unit. It was printed in separate quires (gatherings), and these were subsequently distributed among buyers in synagogues every week (see: Ya'ari, The Hebrew Printing in Constantinople, p. 75). Apparently, this is the reason that this copy, as well as other copies, is incomplete [in this copy, the quires seem to have been originally bound in this fashion].
1-8, 65, 67-70, 72-97, 99-[102], 104, 95-102, 113-224, 226-231, 233-248, 257-272. Leaves of Sefer Mesharim which were bound between leaf 8 and leaf 65 of the Adam part: 3-6, 7-8, 9-18, 23-37, 40-[42], 51-54, 56, 58-64. Mispaginated, many leaves are bound out of their proper order. Only half of leaf 7 of Sefer Mesharim appears in this copy. (Total of 248 leaves).
26.5 cm. Good-very good condition. Stains to some leaves, other leaves are in very good condition, clean and complete. Tears restored with gluing on title page and on several other leaves. Damaged binding.
Provenance: Sassoon family collection.
