Manuscript, six large leaves, 30 short Chassidic essays on matters pertaining to "Shabbat Kodesh" by R. Avraham of Sochaczew, author of Avnei Nezer. Autograph in the handwriting of his son R. Shmuel Bornstein of Sochaczew, author of Shem MiShmuel. [Poland, c. 1900-1920].
In the past, this manuscript was seen by his son R. Chanoch Henich Bornstein, who copied most of its content and wrote on his copy: "Amarot Tehorot by ….my father R. Avraham of Sochaczew - copied from the notebooks which were arranged by my father among the writings left in the estate of the author". R. Chanoch Henich's brother R. Aharon Yisrael Bornstein, editor of Ne'ot HaDeshe (Tel Aviv, 1974-1978) saw this copy, and he incorporated most of the content in various places in his book (as detailed in the introduction to Part 1, p. 11 in which the copy of R. Chanoch Henich is called "Manuscript 1"). However, several sections still have not been printed and also the sections which were printed vary from this manuscript, were apparently revised by the editor of Ne'ot HaDeshe.
R. Shmuel Bornstein (1855-1926), the only son of R. Avraham of Sochaczew, author of Avnei Nezer and Eglei Tal (1839-1910) was born in Kotzk and in his childhood was raised by his holy grandfather the "Saraph" of Kotzk. From his youth, he was famed for his genius, profound thinking and Torah knowledge. After his father died in 1910, he was appointed rebbe and led his Chassidim in the Kotzk method like his father before him, with shrewdness and resolve, not bowing before anyone. He was well-known for his careful adherence to halacha without deviating in the least from the laws and customs of the Shulchan Aruch. His profound Chassidic essays were printed by his eldest son, the rebbe, author of Chasdei David, in the Shem MiShmuel series, which until today remains a basic book of deep Chassidic thought.
The halachic teachings of his father, author of Avnei Nezer was printed in the series of Avnei Nezer responsa and in the book Eglei Tal. However, the deep Chassidic essays of the Avnei Nezer were not printed for many years because his son, the Shem MiShmuel was concerned lest he make even the smallest change from the profundity of his father's brief words. Only after many years, the youngest son of the Shem MiShmuel (born from a second marriage), R. Aharon Yisrael of Tel Aviv compiled and printed his grandfather's essays in the Ne'ot HaDeshe series (Tel Aviv, 1974-1997).
This manuscript is a remnant of the attempts of the author of Shem MiShmuel (in his own handwriting) to edit the Chassidic teachings of his illustrious father, author of Avnei Nezer.
6 leaves, (12 written pages), 33-36 cm. The leaves are numbered 3-8, and the essays are numbered from the beginning of D'rush 14 until the middle of Ma'amar 44. Condition varies among the leaves, good to fair, some leaves have (restored) wear and tear.
The above was written according to an expert's opinion, regarding the content of the manuscript, identifying the handwriting as an autograph of the Shem MiShmuel.
Enclosed: A blank postcard, 14X9.5 cm. printed to be used as the official stationery of R. "Shmuel Bornstein of Sochaczew - who now resides in Zgierz", with a printed date of 192- for completing by hand. Good condition. Few stains.
