Chayei Olam "to strengthen hearts with complete faith and complete service of the Creator", by R. Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky of Steipla (Hornostaipil), author of Kehilot Ya'akov. Bnei Brak, 1967. Second edition.
Long notes, handwritten by the author, the Steipler, appear on the leaf of introduction and the front flyleaf. One of the notes refers to the difficult times of "ikvete d'meshicha" (the time directly preceded the Messiah) which our sages describe as days in which "G-d fearing people will be loathed". The Steipler adds that even in the time of "ikvete d'meshicha", G-d-fearing Jews will exist, but the attitude towards the wicked will change: "Whereas, before the wicked person who denied Torah and mitzvoth was rejected and spurned, and alienated from the holy Jewish community…".
Chayei Olam, authored by R. Ya'akov Yisrael Kanievsky (1899-1985), is an important source of inspiration of faith and trust. The Ponovezh mashgiach R. Yechezkel Lowenstein said that "had he not seen the book Chayei Olam, he would not have believed that a person of such faith could be found in our generation". (Toldot Ya'akov, p. 138), and he would encourage his disciples to study this book. The Steipler was accustomed to laboring over the editing and proofreading of his books. He would add and perfect his words over and over, reevaluating their content and their style and he would not leave a single sentence or topic with an ambiguous interpretation. This is an original copy with many of his handwritten additions.
