Autograph letter signed by Rebbe Meir of Premishlan. Signed "Meir son of the Rebbe". [Premishlan, c. 1840].
Written to his daughter [apparently, the renowned Rebbetzin Miriam Chaya Moshkowitz of Shotz (Suceava)], following a bad dream envisaged by his granddaughter. In the letter, overflowing with blessings, the rebbe soothes his daughter and wishes "blessing and life" to all the members of the family.
He writes: "G-d in his compassion should quickly send his assistance and salvation to his People at all times, for good life, to my daughter Ms. --- all, to ---. Regarding your daughter's account, know that G-d keeps all beings alive... And what you thought, the Tana said that dreams do not raise, and the People of Israel should be joyous with all good. Your father who prays --- Meir son of the Rebbe. To all --- blessing and life ---".
R. Meir of Premishlan (1783-1850) was a Chassidic luminary, son of R. Aharon Leib of Premishlan and grandson of “R. Meir HaGadol" of Premishlan (disciple of the Ba’al Shem Tov). His teacher was Rabbi Mordechai of Kremenets [son of Rabbi Michel of Zlotchov], however he was also a close follower of the Chozeh of Lublin. He was especially famed for his piety and divine inspiration endowing him with amazing foresight. He is credited with hundreds of wonders and marvelous acts of salvation and reputed for his exceptional philanthropy and charity without leaving any money for himself; he would not go to sleep before he distributed all charity funds in his possession. All regarded him highly and R. Shlomo Kluger who was not a Chassid, eulogized him with great esteem and referred to him as: “The celebrated outstanding tsaddik, G-dly man…and I have merited seeing him twice, it is like being in the Divine presence”.
His daughter, Rebbetzin Miriam Chaya Moshkowitz (died in 2003, Encyclopedia L'Chassidut, Vol. 1, p. 533), wife of Rebbe Yoel of Shotz (Suceava) was renowned for her exceptional piety and ability to work wonders. Many Chassidim would send her "kvitlach" (notes). After her father's death, she inherited his walking stick and used it to perform wondrous acts. Before her death, she asked that the stick be buried with her in her grave. She too, liberally distributed charity as inscribed on her husband's tombstone: "He dedicated one fifth of his money". Their caskets were brought to Israel and they were buried on Har HaZeitim in 1973, near the gravesite of their son R. Meir of Shotz, whose casket was likewise brought to Israel.
Leaf, 17X21 cm. Poor condition. Open tears affecting text (restored with paper). Major stains. Housed in an elaborate box, of leather-covered wood, with a glass window.
Enclosed is an expert's report, deciphering the content of the letter and its connotations.
