Das Lied vom Stein [The Song about the Stone], a humorous wedding song, written for the marriage of the groom Max Kalkstein and the bride Else Lewinsohn, by the bride's sister, Anna. [Germany, ca. early 20th century]. German.
The title of the song is a play on the ending of the groom's family name – Stein (German: stone) and its verses introduce the bride's life story as a chain of events of stumbling on various stones, until her meeting with the groom. Beside the text there are several illustrations referring to various episodes from the bride's life.
Throughout the song, several German cities in the area of Eastern Prussia are referred to (Insterburg, Jablonken and Allenstein) and presumably, the families originate from this area. Next to the title, it is noted that the song should be sung according to the tune of "Berliner Luft" ["Berliner Wind"; written in 1904 by Paul Licke].
46x59 cm. Good condition. Fold lines and creases. A few stains. Small tears along the margins and a few holes along the fold lines. An open tear near the right edge (not affecting illustration or text).
