Archaeological researches in Palestine during the Years 1873-1874, by Charles Clermont-Ganneau, with illustrations from drawings by A. Lecomte du Noüy. London: Harrison and Sons for the Committee of The Palestine Exploration Fund, Volume I: 1899, Volume II: 1896. English.
A book dealing with the archaeological research of Palestine on behalf of The Palestine Exploration Fund, accompanied by hundreds of diagrams and illustrations (most of them in the body of the text. Some on plates). The two volumes of the book were published in reverse order: volume I was published in 1899, dealing with archaeological findings that were discovered during excavations in the Old City of Jerusalem and adjacent areas. Volume II was published three years earlier, in 1896, dealing with archaeological sites in Palestine in general.
Before us are volumes from a limited edition On the inside of the two front bindings are paper labels with the inscription: "Special Edition No. 245", hand-signed by James Glaisher, the chairman of the Executive Committee of The Palestine Exploration Fund.
The French Orientalist and archaeologist Charles Clermont-Ganneau (1846-1932) was one of the most prominent researchers of Palestine during the 19th century. He came to Palestine in 1867 to study its archaeological sites. During the years 1873-1874, he headed a British archaeological expedition to Palestine on behalf of The Palestine Exploration Fund. With time, he acquired a reputation as one of the most important researchers of biblical archaeology in Palestine.
Volume I: XVII, 528 pp + [7] plates. Volume II: X, 504 pp + [1] plate. Approx. 28.5cm. Cloth bindings, with gilt impressions. Good overall condition. Many unopened pages in the second volume. Stains. A few creases and tears. Several leaves are partially detached. The front endpaper of the first volume is detached and its margins are torn. Slightly worn bindings, with tears and blemishes to spine and edges. Ownership labels on the inside of the front bindings. A brochure issued by the PEF (1896) about the publication dates of the volumes before us is enclosed with Volume II.
