A letter and two booklets of the Hovevei Zion Association in England. London, 1880s-1890s. Hebrew and English.
A letter handwritten on the official stationery of the Hovevei Zion Association in London, "To the leaders of the community and to its rabbis". London, [1880s]. Hebrew.
The letter calls the leaders of the communities of England to establish associations of Hovevei Zion and support the settlers of Palestine: "And hereby we have come to ask you too, our honorable brothers, to awaken to the calling voice and establish in your city a Hovevei Zion association. And every man will donate money to the treasury of the association every year as his heart prompts him".
The letter was presumably written in proximity to the Katowice Conference (1884), where it was decided, among other things, to establish a central committee of all Hovevei Zion Associations which was to be named "Mazkeret Moshe". The letter refers to the members of Hovevei Zion Association in London, among them Kalman Wollrauch, who was the representative of the London Association to the Katowice Conference.
The lower part of the second page of the letter is cut out and missing (on it appeared, presumably, the signature of its senders).
[1] A folded leaf (two written pages. Part of the second page is missing), approx. 20x25cm. Good condition. Creases and stains (a large stain on the first page).
2. Eastern Palestine, A lecture delivered for the western tent of the Chovevi Zion Association by Claude Reignier Conder. London, Chovevei Zion Association, 1892. English.
A booklet containing the text of a lecture about Palestine delivered by the scholar Claude Reignier Conder to the Hovevei Zion Association of London in 1892.
Claude Reignier Conder (1848-1910) was a British soldier and explorer. During the 1870s, he headed a research expedition of the Palestine Exploration Fund which surveyed Palestine west to the Jordan River.
36 pp, 22cm. Good condition. Stains. Small tears to the cover.
3. Issue no. 9 of Palestina – the Chovevei Zion Quarterly. London: Chovevei Zion Association, September 1894. English.
The issue contains articles about the settlement of Palestine and about Hovevi Zion in Russia, quarterly reports, and more.
32 pp, 21cm. Good condition. Stains. Small tears at the edges of several leaves. Creases, stains and tears to the cover.
