Hershelle Ostropoli, Buenos Aires 1927 - Unknown edition

Hershle Astrafaler, by Yakov Batashansky, 'Oifgang' Publishing, Buenos Aires, 1927, Yiddish. Cover design by Schwartz.

Unknown edition of the well-known essay with Herschela's from Ostropolia  jokes - a chassidic humorist who lived in the Ukraine in the Volhynia region in the second half of the 18th century. Hershelle of Ostropoli was one of the followers of Rabbi Baruch of Mezhibuz, the privileged grandson of the Baal Shem Tov, and he was his "court jester." On the basis of the historical figure of Hershele of Ostropoli, Hershelle is the equivalent of fictional joke heroes in other areas such as Juha in the Middle East, Til Eulenspiegel in Central Europe and Paquela in Romania.

The National Library has several Yiddish editions of the book. This edition, published in Argentina in 1927, does not appear in the National Library.
