Letter (approx. 10 lines) handwritten and signed by R. "Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky", addressed to his mechutan R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv. Bnei Brak, Nissan 1966. Passover wishes: "To my honorable mechutan, the prominent Torah scholar… I hereby bless him and all his companions, may the Festival of Matzot be celebrated in rejoicing and in full conformity with Halacha, with exulting of Mitzva, and may they reap much satisfaction from all their dear descendants. And may we merit to see the rebuilding of the Temple, and partake there from the Passover sacrifices, and may the Kingship be restored to G-d…". At the foot of the letter, the Steipler adds regards from his son R. Chaim Kanievsky and his family: "Regards from his son-in-law, daughter and the entire family". R. Yaakov Yisrael Kanievsky (1899-1985) was known as the Steipler, an appellation derived from his home town Hornostaipil, Ukraine. He was the brother-in-law of the Chazon Ish and mechutan of R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv (1910-2012), since the marriage of his son R. Chaim Kanievsky to the eldest daughter of R. Elyashiv. The Steipler held his mechutan R. Yosef Shalom Elyashiv in high esteem, and would refer Halachic questions to him, as well as names requiring mention in prayer and blessing, even sending people to his daughter-in-law Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky for blessings, since she was of holy descent. Postcard. 9.5 cm. Good condition. Creases and light stains. Various scribbles, penned in the home of the recipient. The address and the sender's name ("HaRav Yaakov Kanievsky") on the verso were also handwritten by the Steipler himself.
