Letter handwritten, signed and stamped by R. Shlomo Zalman Sender Kahana Shapiro, addressed to Dr. Abraham Eliyahu Harkavy. Malech, 1901. R. Shlomo Zalman requests of Dr. Harkavy to assist the emissary acting on behalf of his yeshiva in Malech, who will be coming to Harkavy's city (St. Petersburg). R. Shlomo Zalman Sender Kahana Shapiro (1851-1923), a most outstanding Torah scholar of Lithuania. A great-grandson of R. Chaim of Volozhin, a disciple of the Netziv and of the Beit HaLevi. Leading Torah scholars and yeshiva deans in Lithuania held him in unusually high regard. In 1885, he was appointed rabbi of Malech, where he established his Anaf Etz Chaim yeshiva (named after the Etz Chaim yeshiva in Volozhin which had been closed down at that time), which became one of the prominent Lithuanian yeshivot. In 1903, he went to serve as rabbi of Krinik (Krynki) and transferred his yeshiva there. His son was R. Avraham Dov Ber Shapiro, author of Devar Avraham, Rabbi of Kovno. In 1921, R. Shlomo Zalman immigrated to Eretz Israel and settled in Jerusalem, where he passed away shortly thereafter. His novellae were published in the two volumes of Chiddushei R. Zalman Sender (Machon Yerushalayim, 1993). [1] double leaf. 28 cm. Fair condition. Dampstains. Folding marks.
