Babylonian Talmud - Tractate Berachot and Order Zera'im - Frankfurt am Main, 1720-1722 - Glosses of Rabbi Natan Adler, Copied from his Gemara in his Lifetime
Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Berachot and Order Zera'im, with commentaries. [Frankfurt am Main, 1720-1722]. This volume of Talmud contains glosses in early Ashkenazic script, which were copied from glosses by R. Natan Adler, presumably from the latter's own Gemara, as the inscription at the beginning of the volume (in the flyleaf) attests: "The glosses inscribed in the margins of this Gemara are copied from the glosses of R. Natan son of R. Shimon Adler Katz". R. Natan Adler is mentioned in the inscription as amongst the living, with the addition of the word "zal" by a different writer (following the passing of R. Natan Adler). Additional ownership inscriptions on the endpapers. Most of the glosses consist of textual corrections or references, though some contain original difficulties. R. Natan HaKohen Adler Katz (1742-1800) was born in Frankfurt am Main to R. Yaakov Shimon Adler. He was an outstanding Torah scholar and eminent kabbalist. He served for a while as rabbi of Boskowitz (Boskovice), and headed the yeshiva he established in his home in Frankfurt. He was the prime teacher of R. Moshe Sofer – the Chatam Sofer, who mentions him extensively in his books in matters of Halacha and Kabbalah, referring to him as "My prime teacher, the renowned and pious Torah scholar, the great eagle" (eagle alludes to his name Adler, which is the German word for eagle), and other similar titles. The prayers services held in his Beit Midrash in Frankfurt conformed with his singular kabbalistic customs, provoking much persecution from the residents of his city. [3], 2-100 leaves; 87 leaves. 33 cm. Title page of tractate Berachot mostly lacking. Separate title page for Order Zera'im. Condition varies, most leaves in good condition.
