(Theoretical physicist and Noble Prize winner, 1879-1955).

Typed Letter Signed, on embossed personal letterhead, written in English,

to Mr. I. Newburger.

Princeton, New Jersey,

10th June, 1939.

"In these years of affliction, our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test. May we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us. We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause.”

One page. Double-matted and framed with portrait photograph of Einstein to an overall size of 26 x 20 inches. In good condition, with overall fading.

A VITAL, TIMELESS LETTER, IN WHICH ALBERT EINSTEIN SEES BEYOND PRESENT TRIBULATION AND LOOKS TO JEWISH MUTUAL SUPPORT AND BROTHERHOOD AS THE SECRET TO ETERNAL RESILIENCE.

LETTER READS IN FULL:

"May I offer my sincere congratulations to you on the splendid work you have undertaken on behalf of the refugees during Dedication Week.

The power of resistance which has enabled the Jewish people to survive for thousands of years has been based to a large extent on traditions of mutual helpfulness. In these years of affliction our readiness to help one another is being put to an especially severe test. May we stand this test as well as did our fathers before us.

We have no other means of self-defense than our solidarity and our knowledge that the cause for which we are suffering is a momentous and sacred cause.

It must be a source of deep gratification to you to be making so important a contribution toward rescuing our persecuted fellow-Jews from their calamitous peril and leading them toward a better future."

BACKGROUND:

Two weeks before sending this letter, Einstein gave the inaugural address at the opening of the Jewish Palestine Pavilion at the New York World's Fair to a crowd of 100,000, encouraging his audience to “fight with all [their] might.”

Dedicated to supporting and protecting Jews worldwide, Einstein, in his time, was one of the most influential and effective voices throughout the Jewish world.

The present deeply moving and deeply powerful letter insists that it is strength through solidarity that is the bedrock to Jewish survival and achievement through the ages.

In 1999, Time Magazine ran a series of articles entitled “Time 100: The Most Important People of the Century.” At the dawn of the new 21st century, notably it was Albert Einstein who was selected by Time as The Person of the Century.

ANOTHER HISTORIC EINSTEIN LETTER deriving from the Paul G. Allen Collection, written some eight weeks after the present letter, and sent to President Roosevelt, was recently sold at Christie’s, New York, for just under four million dollars.
