Tracate Bava Kama with Yiddish translation, Brussels 1952
Tractate Bava Basra with vowelization and Yiddish translation by Rabbi Shmuel Hibner. Brussels, 1952. Translation and vowelization were written with great self-sacrifice during the Holocaust (1943-1943), during the Nazi occupation of Belgium. Approbations from the rabbis of Jerusalem, Antwerp and Brussels.
In his introduction, the publisher writes why he published this gemara: Hitler was determined to destroy the Jews and Jewish traditions, so he decided to translate the Talmud in order to perserve its study by the remnants of the Jewish Nation. He was scared that Judaism would be regulated to history books. Rabbi Shmuel Hibner (a Galician refugee who hid in a concealed apartment in Brussels) decided to translate the Talmud into venacular, clear, understandable Yiddish that was loyal to the original. Rabbi Hibner worked on his project during days of pain and danger, under the German occupation, while racked with hunger. The memorial pages includes a special dedication to the libraries and books that were destroyed and burnt by the Nazi enemy.Rabbi Hibner originally planned on publishing additional volumes of the Talmud, but this was the only one that was actually printed in this format.
