Austria-Hungary / Habsburg Empire: Jewish Property Ownership Ordnance silvered bronze medal, 1860; by Alfons Desaide-Roquelay (France), commissioned by Ch[ristian] Krauss (Budapest) & minted by Pr. Seidan (Vienna); weight: 243.7g; size: 74mm; thickness: 6mm. Obverse: allegorical images of Fortuna & Genius around altar with Emperor Franz Joseph's portrait, tablet with Hebrew legend "One Law for All", scroll with Hebrew legend "One Rule for One Nation", 2-lined legend around edge "The Israelites your entire nation builds an altar in your heart on their monument of eternal gratitude" + 5-lined legend in exergue. On reverse 25-line summary of the law within legend around edge. Often misdescribed as medal of Jewish emancipation (GJPM-137): it commemorates ordinance which required Jews in the specified areas to achieve a certain level of education in order to own land; it made Jewish ownership of land difficult to achieve & was rescinded in 1864. Austria-Hungary's Jews finally emancipated in 1867. A cynical medal but artistically beautiful. In EF-AU: a subtle die-crack on center of reverse; a crack along the rim. Scarce in such grade. Ref. Forrer v. 3 pg. 220.
