Collection of Photographs and Documents – Jewish Sailor on the Polish Passenger Ship "SS Polonia", 1930s
Collection of photographs and documents which belonged to Aron Bornsztejn, crew member of the Polish passenger ship SS Polonia which operated a line to Palestine. [1930s].
The Polish passenger ship "Polonia" operated between the years 1930-1938. In 1933 "Polonia" started to transfer passengers from the port of Konstanca (Romania), through Istanbul and Piraeus, to the port of Haifa in Palestine; many of the Fifth Aliyah immigrants from Poland arrived on this ship.
The collection includes:
* About 70 photographs of Bornsztejn and group photographs of crew members and passengers on "Polonia". Some are stamped with photographer's ink-stamp: "Boleslaw Furmanek fotograf s/s Polonia Konstanca Port (Romania)". Some photographs are divided on the back to be used as postcards.
* Three album leaves with 32 mounted photographs. Some photographs were taken on the deck of a ship and some in Palestine.
* Four certificates in the name of Bornsztejn: two certificates (booklets) on behalf of "Polonia", with photographs of Bornsztejn (one certificate states Bornsztejn's occupation as the ship's laundry man); ksiazeczka wojskowa [military notebook]; * Palestinian passport (issued by the Mandate administration); * booklet of "The National union of Seamen, Catering Department".
* More photographs which belonged to Bornsztejn.
Total of about 120 photographs and four certificates. Size and condition vary.
