A portrait photograph of the British military officer and archaeologist Charles Warren. One of the first archaeologists in Palestine. London, [ca. 1888].
The photograph is mounted on cardboard, signed in the plate on the bottom margin: Barraud [Herbert Rose Barraud].
Charles Warren (1840-1927), officer in the British Royal Engineers, was sent to Palestine in 1867 by the British Palestine Exploration Fund and was partner to some of the most important discoveries in Jerusalem area: "Hasmonean Hall", "LMLK seals", a shaft near the City of David and other findings. One of the Western Wall gates - "Warren Gate" - is named after him.
Enclosed are two leaves with a four-page article surveying Warren's life until 1886. Numbered 118-120.
Photograph: 24.5X17.5 cm. Slight damages (mainly at margins). Mounted on cardboard, board: 36X25.5 cm, with defects, stains, tears and open tears at margins.
